My journalism is strongly influenced by skills gained through working with Arts and youth bodies such as BBC Blast and The Poetry Society, and a natural enthusiasm for all things creative. Having had the chance to grow up in south Manchester I’m continually on the lookout for new places and opportunities, from poetry nights to cafes.

  • GTTP Travel Writing Competition; senior UK overall winner [2008]
  • Winner of national BBC ‘Making Waves’ competition; entry included examples of my writing, prize was a day of masterclasses at BBC studios, London [2004]
  • Commended Foyle Young Poet of The Year [2006]
  • Ilkley Literature Festival Poetry Competition; runner-up in YP category [2008]

Work Experience

The Poetry Society, London (Summer 2008)

  • succeeded in negotiating regional discounts for Poetry Society members with booksellers nationwide
  • coordinated the archiving of several years of ‘SLAMbassadors’ project
  • developed my usage of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access
  • contributed to senior staff meetings, e.g. suggestions on Green policy

 

Children’s Centre [‘Ganztagsbetreuung'] Biberach, Germany (Summer 2008)

  • communicated in a German-speaking environment within a team
  • cared for children’s well-being and safety whilst on a variety of excursions
  • identified potential safety-hazards, e.g. at swimming pool, and initiated methods of prevention

 
Key Positions of Responsibility

Anglo-French Fellowship, British Council (October 2008 - February 2009)

  • management of entire project, from project proposal, preliminary research in England, meetings and interviews in France, to writing project report for British Council
  • liaising in English and French with coordinating teachers and British Council staff
  • sensitivity required, due to nature of project: French opinions of the influence of EU on French education

 

BBC Blast Youth Panel Member (2008)

  • contributed to key BBC Blast meetings, suggesting relevant information to progress BBC Blast project
  • gained an appreciation of working in a large team, with a diverse group of people
  • required great flexibility in working from home as well as travelling to meetings
  • learnt in depth information about Arts provision from advertising, to creative partners and funding proposals

 

Creative Consultants’ Member, Manchester Art Gallery (Early 2006 - Spring 2007)

  • explored exhibitions and collections to help interpret art works for a younger audience
  • developed ideas at home, to be built upon in group meetings
  • great flexibility required, e.g. travelling to meetings in London to work with other regional groups

  • driving license: full, clean
  • practical usage of spoken French and German through independent cultural visits to France and Germany
    completed a three-week NAGTY Summer School in Creative Writing at The University of Warwick [2006]
