About Me

Katy Murr at Dune Pyla in France
I enjoy scribbling poetry and fiction.
My poems will feature in the next issues of Brand and The Delinquent; my poetry has previously appeared inReadThis ezine (although they haven’t updated their archives yet, grr) as well as on my previous blog. Who knows, maybe I’ll sprinkle a few around this new blog.
If you want the boring info about awards and stuff that I’ve won, read below…
During my not-so-long writingtime, I’ve been given several accolades. I’ve been commended as a Foyle Young Poet of The Year (2006) and more recently I was a runner-up in the Ilkley Literature Festival’s poetry competition. I also got a trip to London and shown round the BBC studios way back in year 8 due to a form I filled in on the importance of writing, and some poems I sent off. The competition was called ‘Making Waves’, run by BBC Blast. I love BBC Blast to this day.
General fiction & not so boring info:
I’ve also taken part in a three week Creative Writing summer course at The University of Warwick which was excellent (in all seriousness, it was.) What else? … I’m working on a novel. I’ve been churning it over and roasting the ideas in my mind for a while. Time to spit them out onto the screen, I think.
I write short stories too, but I’ve kept them in my mits so far. Under wraps. Maybe one day I’ll send them out in the big wild world.
Literary Fiction/ Nattering about what I like to read:
also interests me. There’s a snippet of a review I did on Moniza Alvi’s ‘Europa’ in the latest issue of emag, which you can find here.
I plan to write reviews. Need somewhere to put them though. Unless my blog readers want reviews to pick from too?
‘Who the heck is she?’
I am a freelance journalist from Manchester.
Although I’m still at sixth form, it means I’m able to scribble about things others can’t. Take my recent article at The Independent as an example. Peering into life at Eton was only possible due to my age. Fear not, however - I am legally an adult.
I am available to review and discuss opportunities for ‘the yoof’, providing a unique insight into today’s teenagers.
‘Er, yeh, but does she have any experience?’
Working with the BBC Blast team on their Youth Panel has cemented my familiarity in Youth Arts, building upon experience at Manchester Art Gallery’s team and a couple of weeks’ hard graft in Education and Membership departments at The Poetry Society last summer.
See my CV/ résumé here.
‘What else?’
I’m particularly interested in travel (read: I want to travel!), which is eased by my ability to converse in French and German as well as English.
I recently returned back from an Anglo-French fellowship project with the British Council, where I spent two weeks researching near Bordeaux. More to come on this soon!
You can get in touch with me here, and find more examples of my work here.
